9th Annual QED Proof-of-Concept White Paper Selection and Showcase

Designed to provide guidance, facilities, funding, and an outlet for entrepreneurs across 31 academic institutions in Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the University City Science Center in Philadelphia, PA, along with its many programs, such as the QED Proof-of-Concept, has supported and promoted considerable economic development as well as innovation by convening its diverse members, which make up a capable, and powerful innovation ecosystem.  This ecosystem sparks the spirt of enterprise, expanding and strenghtening the technology and life science sectors. More specifically, the QED Proof-of-Concept team, reviews, discusses and awards up to $200K per selected team, with funding being announced to the recent awardees respective institutions for Round 9 by the end of 2016.  Albert Di Rienzo, President & CEO of Radicle Innovation, was one of a dozen external reviewers for this year's program, and has been a participant in the QED Proof-of-Concept team for the past several years.  Albert plans on participating in future Proof-of-Concept programs as a reviewer as long as his expertise bring value to the Proof-of-Concept team, and the presenters.

Since the program’s inception in 2009, QED has screened 475 proposals from 21 participating academic and research institutions. Of the technologies screened, 94 projects have been accepted into the competitive program, and paired with scientists and industry professionals. QED has awarded a total of $4.85 million to 28 projects, primarily in the therapeutic/biologic, device/diagnostic, and digital health sectors. Of these 28 projects, eight technologies have been licensed, while five have gone on to form startup companies. Projects awarded funding by the QED program have raised over $19 million in follow-on funding.
